The boxing champion decided to build his own luxury wedding venue in his hometown of Bolton – but the project has already taken an enormous chunk out of his finances.

Speaking in his new BBC reality show Meet The Khans, Amir explains the business venture was his dad’s ideas to keep him busy once he retires and give back to the community.

He planned to create a “one-stop wedding shopping mall” with space for ceremonies to take place as well as retail units devoted to selling products for the big day.

Initial construction n the site was completed in 2015 but it has been rocked by delays and was even damaged by a fire.

Confessing the whole affair had been “such a headache”, Amir explains that it took five years to build and was told it would cost £3.2million.

However, he has now spent £11.5million and will need to sink even more cash in to get the place up and running.

“It hurts you knowing how much money has gone to waste,” admits despondent Amir in his fly on the wall series.

“I’m talking millions. Literally £5million has gone missing. I don’t know where it’s gone.”

Admitting to his own mistakes, Amir says he wants wife Faryal Makhdoom to get the project back on track because she is “more ruthless”.

The boxer claims he practically gives money away, while Faryal will say “no” to

people.

“We definitely need you in charge of that side of things to make sure we don’t spend too much money,” he explains.

For the first time in ages, Faryal arrives at the site of the derelict building to look at the progress.

The elite wedding venue is currently just a shell of a building but had £1.5million worth of glass installed since Faryal’s last visit.

Showing her his vision, Amir explains there will be a restaurant, massive glass lift and glass stairs descending down to the reception area.

Faryal puts a dampener on his plans by suggesting they have already spent too much money, but Amir is forced to admit it has already been paid for.

“The trouble with Amir is he says ‘yes’ to everything and that’s why he needs me,” says Faryal, who claims her husband pays people before they’ve done the work.

Sheepish Amir replies: “They always sell me a dream. They say we’re going to do this and that for you.”

The couple decided they need a ‘good cop bad cop’ strategy in order to make their business a success.

“I can’t wait for it to be finished, there’s so much weight on my shoulders that will be taken off,” confesses Amir.

There’s not too much to look at during a tour of the building, but there is one surprise at the very top.

Faryal is stunned by the rooftop views across the whole of Bolton and gets an idea for her own marriage.

She tells her husband: “What will be really cool is if we renew our vowels on the couple. It keeps the love going.”

Last year Boxer Amir Khan said the development delays at his wedding venue were caused by “unprofessional management’.
