Former, ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif going back to the jail as the six-week bail period comes to end. He has left for Lahore Kot Lakhpat jail from his Jati Umra residence accompanied by his supporters in a rally.
He has been serving a seven-year prison term at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail since December 24, 2018 when an accountability court convicted him in the Al Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference.
On March 26, he was granted six weeks bail on medical grounds. The Supreme Court on May 3 had dismissed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nwaz (PML-N) supremo’s review petition seeking permanent bail on medical grounds and the permission to go abroad for treatment.
The Home Department Punjab earlier instructed the three-time Prime Minister to reach the jail by 5 pm on Tuesday and said his arrival in a procession would be against the law.
Protesting against the instructions, PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said that Sharif’s bail is valid till the midnight of May 7, 11:59 PM.
His nephew, Hamza Shehbaz, is driving him while his daughter Maryam Nawaz is accompanying him. A large number of PML-N workers and leaders gathered outside his residence to bid farewell to their leader.
