Firm Boss Mafizur Rahman jailed and Firm Fined £150,000 after worker Lost his Life in Birmingham

Mafizur Rahman boss at his family business has been jailed and his family firm fined almost £150,000 after a worker fell to his death from an unsafe roof.

The Polish-born worker who was working for firm Al Amin Wholesale Ltd, based in Aston, after he fell to his death as he worked on a unit at Al Amin’s Grosvenor Road base on January 5, 2015. Another worker also fell but survived, though he suffered multiple fractures.

Mafizur Rahman and the firm, Aston-based Al Amin Wholesale Ltd, failed to warn the victim that the roof he was working on was fragile. There was a warning sign, Boss Mafizur Rahman and firm Al Amin should have warned the workers about it. The work was not appropriately planned, supervised or carried out and there was no safe method of working on the roof.

Court heard, Rahman’s main purpose was to get the job done as cheaply as possible with complete disregard for the safety of his workers.

Rahman, 32, of Trinity Road, Aston, was jailed for 2 and half years. While the company pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and was fined £144,000 with £44,600 costs.
