The New York Police department forced three Muslim women to remove their headscarves for taking their mugshots. They resisted and at the same time sued NYPD.Now they have been paid $180,000, which makes it $60,000 after the settlement has been finalized in a Brooklyn Federal Court earlier this week.
Their lawyer Tahanie Aboushi told that two of them were arrested in 2015 and one in 2012.This incident took place in Brooklyn, Newyork’s most populated borough.
The women claimed that their rights had been violated and sued the city and the NYPD, which is the largest city police force in the United States represented by the city’s law department.
Since this incident took place, the New York police have their changed their guidelines for taking mugshots wearing a religious head covering , giving them the option of having their photos taken in private by an officer
Kimberly Joyce, a spokeswoman for the city of New York’s law department said the resolving these matters were in the best interest of all the involved parties.
The US media has identified one of the plaintiffs as high school pupil at that time, which was detained on a harassment complaint and told that another one arrested in a dispute over parking.
