The Punjab government on Saturday said that incarcerated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif continues to have the facility of an air-conditioner and TV, according to a media report.
Responding to a letter it received from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif regarding the facilities being provided to the ousted premier in Kot Lakhpat Jail, the provincial government said that Nawaz has been provided with heater, table, chair and exercise equipment along with an AC and TV as per the recommendations of the medical board.
Nawaz is in prison after an accountability court handed him a seven-year jail term in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.
According to the government’s response, the former prime minister also has the facility of meeting his doctor and family members.
Last month when, Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, was on visit to the United States addressed the Pakistani diaspora in Washington, said that former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif eats home-made food in his air-conditioned jail cell that has a television in it too. His government will ensure that Mr Sharif does not receive such treatment in jail.
“Nawaz Sharif wants food from home in jail, he wants air conditioning in jail. But in a country where half the population has no air conditioning or TV, what kind of punishment this is?” said Imran Khan in a 50-minute speech.
