A man and his wife in Lahore have beaten a 10-year-old housemaid black and blue in Samanabad police precincts for allegedly stealing Rs500. Police said on Sunday that they have arrested accused Suhail Anjum, an SDO of the Buildings Department while his wife Afshan managed to escape from the scene.

Police shifted the minor girl, Kiran, to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and arrested her employer, identified as Sohail, a sub-divisional officer (SDO) in the Punjab Building Department.

Kiran, a native of Burewala, was working in Sohail’s house for the last 10 months and she was not paid her salary. Sohail and his wife, who could not be identified, tortured the maid, accusing her of stealing Rs500. Police arrested Sohail while his wife managed to escape.

Samanabad police arrested the SDO of Building Department who with the abetment of his wife subjected his 10-year-old maid to severe torture. The injured maid identified as Kiran was admitted to hospital. The accused SDO Suhail Anjum and his wife had severely tortured the maid, suspecting her to be involved in stealing Rs500.

Police said the young girl has been working as a housemaid at the residence for the last couple of years but she was tortured on the suspicion of stealing Rs500. The victim was shifted to Ganga Ram Hospital for medical checkup, the police said. Human rights activists have constantly been highlighting concerns about the incidents of torturing child maids.
