Riya Rajkumar, 11, was picked up by her father, Roopesh Rajkumar 41, at a Mississauga gas station on Valentine’s day. He was supposed to take his daughter out for a birthday dinner, but hours later she was found dead. Roopesh was arrested by police outside of Orillia and taken to the hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Her father was arrested shortly after the discovery of her body, at around midnight on Thursday, and is expected to be formally charged Friday. Police revealed in a Friday afternoon update that Rajkumar has been hospitalized, in police custody, since his arrest.
Rajkumar was originally transferred to a different hospital before being moved to a trauma centre in Toronto due to the severity of his injury.
The father made threats to harm his daughter and himself to his former wife, Peel police spokesperson Danny Marttini told reporters Friday morning.
The child’s mother went to Peel’s 22 Division when Roopesh, her former boyfriend, didn’t return with the little girl at the agreed-upon time of 6:30 p.m., and began making comments suggesting he was going to harm both himself and his daughter, police said.
The girl’s mother alerted police at around 7 p.m. on Thursday, triggering an investigation to locate the two before the Amber Alert was issued.
Nobody else was in the home at the time, Const. Akhil Mooken said, and the young girl’s cause of death was not released.
